1. Exfoliate Like a Pro

Exfoliation is your a key step in prepping for your spray tan. Why? Because smooth skin means an even tan. Here’s how to do it right:

• No Scrub, No Problem: Exfoliate by taking a long shower or soaking in the tub and use a cloth or sponge to rub over skin to remove dead skin cells.
• Choose the Right Scrub: Opt for a gentle, oil-free exfoliant. Oils can leave a residue that messes with the tan application.
• Focus on Rough Spots: Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, and ankles—these areas love to hoard dead skin.
• Timing is Everything: Exfoliate the night before your appointment. This gives your skin time to settle and prevents irritation.

2. Hair Removal: Handle with Care

If you’re planning to shave or wax, do it at least 24 hours before your spray tan. Shaving can create micro-cuts, and waxing can leave residue—both of which can interfere with your tan.

• Shaving: Use a fresh razor and shave the night before your appointment.
• Waxing: Schedule your waxing session 1-2 days prior. Make sure to clean off any leftover wax thoroughly.

3. Light lotion and deodorant is okay, but skip the perfume

Clean skin is optimal for an even spray tan. However, you can apply a light moisturizer in the morning if you aren’t tanning for several hours (the lotion will absorb into your skin or you can wipe off with wet cloth before tan) and you CAN wear deodorant.  Don’t spray on perfume or anything with alcohol, body oil, and avoid skin care with retinol or chemical exfoliants one or two days before.

• Lotion: If you have dry skin, apply a light lotion.
• Deodorant: Okay unless you’re getting a competition spray tan.
• Perfume: Just say no. Fragrances can interfere with the tan.
• Anti-Aging ingredients: lay off retinol, and chemical exfoliants before and after your spray tan.

4. Wear the Right Outfit

After your spray tan, you don’t want anything rubbing off your new glow. Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment. Think comfy sweats or a flowy dress.

• Dark Colors: Choose black or dark tones to avoid staining.
• Loose Fit: Go for clothes that won’t cling to your skin.
• Socks and shoes. Flip flops and sandals will leave marks on your foot

Let me walk you through the process of preparing for your wedding makeup and hair so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare. Here’s my step-by-step guide, from our first consultation to the moment you say, “I do!”

1. The Initial Consultation

Everything starts with a chat—this is where we get to know each other! We’ll talk about your vision, your wedding style, and any makeup or hair inspiration you might have. Whether you’re going for a natural glow or a more glamorous look, I’ll help you figure out what will make you feel like the best version of yourself on your wedding day.

My Tip: Bring inspiration photos, your wedding theme details, and any questions you have about the process. The more I know, the better I can bring your vision to life!

2. The Trial Run

The trial session is one of my favorite parts of the process! It’s our chance to experiment and ensure every detail is just right for you. The next day, I’ll follow up to hear how the makeup and hair held up throughout the day. I’ll ask for your honest feedback—were you happy with your foundation coverage? Did you want more or less definition in your brows, eyeliner, cheek color, or lip shade? Your input is essential to perfecting your look, and I promise, it never hurts my feelings!

• For Makeup: We’ll play with different levels of glam, find the perfect foundation match, and make sure your makeup feels comfortable and lasts through a day of celebrations.
• For Hair: Start with clean, blow-dried hair for the best results. If you have inspiration photos, bring them along—if not, don’t worry, I have plenty to share! We’ll focus on how the front of your hair frames your face and how the back complements your dress, the weather, and your overall aesthetic. Together, we’ll create a style that’s perfectly tailored to you!

My Tip: If possible, any accessories you’re planning to wear in your hair. This helps us make sure everything fits perfectly with your overall look.

• Skincare: I always recommend starting a good skincare routine months in advance. We’ll make sure your skin is moisturized, exfoliated, and glowing. Avoid introducing any new products right before the big day to prevent breakouts or reactions.
• Hair Care: Regular trims and using the right products (a clarifying shampoo can do wonders do remove buildup). Damaged hair can’t be magically fixed in a style and you don’t need extra long hair for an updo. If you’re coloring your hair, we’ll plan the final touch-up a week or two before the wedding so it’s fresh but not too new.

My Tip: If you’re considering a spray tan, I recommend scheduling it a couple of days before the wedding for a natural glow that complements your makeup. If you’re a spray tan newbie, schedule a trial spray tan a few weeks before.

4. Wedding Day Prep

On the big day, we’ll make sure you have plenty of time to get ready. I like to create a calm and relaxed atmosphere so you can enjoy the process. I’ll ask if you If you have any last minute tweaks and then we’ll get started:

• Makeup: We’ll start with a clean, moisturized face and use long-lasting, waterproof products to keep your makeup looking fresh all day. I’ll focus on enhancing your natural beauty while making sure your look holds up in photos.
• Hair: We’ll style your hair to perfection based on what we decided during the trial. Fresh, clean hair or a bit of texture (depending on the style) will help us achieve the best results.

My Tip: Keep a small touch-up kit handy, with essentials like your lip color, pressed powder, and hairpins. I’ll also help you put it together so you can stay flawless throughout the event.

5. Final Touches and Go Time!

Once your makeup and hair are done, I’ll make sure everything is picture-perfect before you step into your dress. We’ll check your look in different lighting to ensure it’s flawless in every shot. After any last-minute adjustments, you’ll be ready to make your grand entrance!

How to pluck your brows in 4 easy steps:

• Take a concealer on a small concealer brush (or use one with a doe-foot applicator) and go over the area/hairs that need to be plucked. Tip: Don’t wait until your brows are fully grown in to clean up. (see photos below)
• Trim long hairs that extend over concealer or leave them long, it’s your choice.
• Pluck only the brows covered with concealer:
  • Hair comes out easier when the skin is pulled taut: gently pull skin toward your temple or hairline with one finger and then pull hair out in the opposite direction (with the hair growth). Raising your eyebrows helps to tighten skin as well.
  • Resist the urge to pluck more to perfect the line, you’re going to perfect that with a brow pencil.
• Fill in the shape and perfect the perimeter with a brow powder or pencil (see below for recommendations)

The more you use this technique the less you will need the concealer because you’ll learn the exact shape and exact brows that are on the don’t pluck list!
As easy as this seems, I still want to warn against things that can lead to over-plucking:

Top reasons women over pluck their eyebrows

• attempting to get a perfectly straight line
• trying in vain to match the other brow
• only using a magnifying mirror to view the brow, step back and view from a few feet away
• bad lighting and too much alcohol.

I have fallen prey to all of the above and have lived to tell the tale. We are all just a raging hormone, dim bulb or glass of wine away from wreaking havoc on our brows.
